Nokia N97 Gets v20 Firmware Update

Today saw the release of the long awaited v20 firmware update which was expected to bring kinetic scrolling throughout all menus on the N97, being able to hold keys down to access the alternative character/number when typing as well as some other much needed bug fixes. One important feature which was expected, Skype, is not included and is expected again, at a later date.

Remove Boingo Access Point from the N97

A pet hate of mine is pre-installed apps on devices, especially when they can’t be removed from the paltry storage space provided. In the case of the N97, you may have started up the Boingo application that comes pre-installed, by mistake with no intention of ever using it, only to find out that it adds a new Internet Access Point to your Destinations that cannot be removed! The only solution until now has been to carry out a soft reset of the phone.

A Problem with the Nokia N97

I’ve had the Nokia N97 for a few weeks now and am getting used to the small niggles and problems that were observed during the initial setup of the device along with some minor awkwardness scrolling the menus due to being left-handed. One of the biggest, if not THE biggest problem with Nokia’s flagship(!) handset is the way storage has been implemented and used on the handset.

The Nokia N97 was released ‘sim-free’ in the UK a week before it was available for purchase on contract with the mobile networks. I chose to purchase the N97 in black and I am tied into an 18 month contract for it. For those interested, the handset was £29.99 on a £35 a month tariff including T-Mobile’s Internet add-on. Yes, I paid for it but whether paid for or not, I can be just as critical or praising of a product. Over a few articles I will write about the handset, software, shortcomings and improvements. Today, I start with my observations of the handset itself.

[UPDATE] As I was going through the phone’s settings one by one restoring my tones and programs, scrolling through the list of files to select my ringtone I noticed that one of the video clips appeared! The preview of the video clip worked so I set it as the ringtone. YES! N95s on v20.0.15 can now use video ringtones without having to rely on third-party software! Also, there is a new visualisation available called Circles in Music Player.
